I guess K has a similar trajectory as Deckard in the first one, he slowly finds his humanity as the movie goes on, but it just didn't work for me for some reason. The replicants in the original one, were slowly revealed to be more human than the humans.

I had the same thing when it came to his girlfriend, she was basically a computer program and while there was some ambiguity when it came to whether she was conscious or just programmed to act that way, she never revealed her inner humanity which made it hard for me to connect with her.

I don't know if it was the performance or the character, but I couldn't bridge that distance between me and the main character of the movie.

I couldn't connect with K, it was like he was hiding too much or had nothing to him. In 2049 there are two main characters, K and his girlfriend, which I suppose was a kind of stand in for Rachel. I couldn't connect with the characters, while in Blade Runner the characters seemed alive and at least two dimensional, with the replicants being more "fleshed out" than the humans. I can't say the director did a bad job, I won't pretend to know that they somehow failed, only that it was strange to me, a person who likes the length and plodding nature of Blade Runner who be somehow bored by the same elements in Blade Runner 2049. I could never really understand why they found it boring, until I watched Blade Runner 2049.

I once had a friend fall asleep in the middle of the movie. What I've noticed is that despite the acclaim the movie gets from people who really love it and consider it a classic, the response from like "regular" movie watchers is the complete opposite. So Blade Runner (final cut) is like in my top five favorite movies of all time, and any time I get an opportunity I'll try to show it to my friends and family. First a disclaimer, I'm in no way a film expert so this is my opinion not an analysis.
